Frame of Reference
Education should support students in their development to become socially responsible citizen who are capable of following their passions and creating successful lives. Education should include the tools students will need so once they are out of school so they are capable of learning on their own. Education should honor students pasts, support students in their presents, and inspire students for their futures.
I want to build relationships with my students, their parents and my colleagues. The more the parents of the students know the more they can support their children in their learning. I would be sure to communicate a level of approachability to the students and their parents so they will feel at ease to communicate their feelings and questions to me, regardless of their backgrounds, ideas, and beliefs. I will collaborate with my colleagues so I can be confident I am providing the students with the support and resources they need. I will work to offer a fair and unbiased education and model to students how interact with other people of diverse background. Positive reinforcement is necessary to classroom management. As a class we will develop our expectations. This will increase student accountability and co-operation. I will consistently encourage positive behaviour. When a problem occurs I will try to work through and resolve it with students. I will work within school policy but try to avoid the use of expulsion and suspension when possible.
As a teacher I will do everything that I can to ensure that all the students feel safe, welcome and comfortable while at school and in my classroom. I will create a positive environment. I want laughter and humour to be part of the classroom culture. I will work to build trusting and caring relationships with my
students. I will create a classroom that values individuals. I want to ensure my students have social consciences and be respectful to their peers. I want to have a happy, calm and inviting classroom. My classroom will be clean, safe and full of color with designated areas for reading and playing. I will have the classroom routine posted so the students are aware of the day’s activities.
I will be observant so that I can be aware of students’ capabilities and difficulties. I want to make sure that all students have the tools and resources they need to be successful. I want to be an active listener and pick up on both verbal and nonverbal cues. I think it is very important to help struggling students as early as possible so they do not fall too far behind and become self conscious and be reluctant to ask for help. As a teacher I want to create an environment where making a mistake is not something to be ashamed of, it is just part of learning.
Assessment will be used throughout the lesson, unit, and year so that students can receive extra support when needed. I will use questioning, descriptive feedback, class created criteria, self and peer assessment, shared learning intentions to build ownership into the students learning. Assessment will be done in a variety of methods so all students have a chance to show their knowledge and skills. Conversation and observation would be included in the assessment.
I will teach with energy excitement and enthusiasm, as I want to instill a passion and a questioning of knowledge. Whenever possible I will choose subjects
that are relevant and interesting to students. I will emphasize the processes of learning and the questioning of what is learned, rather than the specific facts
that are learned. I want my students to be able to learn about the world around them once they leave school. I will encourage students to think critically. I want students to be able to question the information they are given and reflect on it, with an open mind. When teachers are passionate and excited about the subject matter or learning the students pick up on that energy. I want to inspire my students. I will involve students in instructions by showing example and asking questions so they are engaged. I will use a variety of methods to help keep my students interested in learning. Discussion is important because it sparks inquiry, leads to meaningful questions, persuasive arguments and new perspectives. I want my students to question and ponder information rather than just memorize it. Each person is valued in the discussion, they are heard and respected.
All students are unique; I will respect and teach to all learning style. I will adapt my lesson to meet the needs of the students so they understand the curriculum. I will integrate visual arts, drama and other creative and physical activities to go along with the literacy, numeracy and science to create active lesson. I believe movement is important to learning. I will have lots of activities during class time. I will act out and use manipulatives when possible to explain concepts. I will use technology and innovative techniques when appropriate to prepare student for 21st century learning.
As a teacher I have a professional duty to be prepared, flexible and knowledgeable. I need to be observant and reflective to grow in my teaching. It is important as a teacher to be a life-long learner. I want to engage students in the learning process while teaching them the basic foundations of knowledge they will need to progress.
